A Fantastical World
Lingūn is a fictional planet of my own design with several magic systems I will post about on my substack, but that’s not what we’re here to talk about. That being said, some information about Lingūn is useful to understand how time is divided.
Lingūn is approximately the size of Earth
Lingūn rotates at the same speed as Earth
Lingūn’s orbit around the star at the center of its solar system lasts 200 rotations (days)
The peoples of Lingūn rely on base 20 for their mathematical endeavors.
Let’s Get Dividing!
Orbits
= 200 Earth Days
1 Orbit lasts 200 Lingūnian Rotations
Rotations
= 1 Earth Day
Each Rotation is divided into 20 Sections. (Instead of a day being divided into 24 hours, a Rotation is divided into 20 sections).
Sections
= 1.2 Earth Hours
Sections are divided into 20 Degrees. (Instead of Hours being divided into 60 minutes, Sections are divided into 20 Degrees).
Degrees
= 3.6 Earth Minutes
Degrees are named this because they last the time it takes Lingūn to rotate 1 Lingūnian mathematical degree out of 400 on either of the Equinoxes (Lingūnians split their circle into 400 equal pieces instead of 360 to get their measurement of angles).
Degrees are divided into 200 Moments.
Moments
=1.08 Earth Seconds
Moments are the smallest division of time on Linūn, further division requires the use of a fraction with 1 Moment as the numerator.
But Wait! There’s More!
Keen-eyed readers might have spotted the word equinox which implies the existence of seasons, right now they’re thinking “There are seasons! There are seasons!” and they are correct. But Lingunians don’t divide their Orbits into 4 seasons, they prefer 5.
Seasons
= 40 Earth Days
There are 5 Seasons named: Frost, Rain, Sun, Wind, and Fall after the meteorological and natural events that take place during each.
Limnels
= 20 Earth Days
Think of Limnels as Months, with each lasting half a Season, there are 10 in an Orbit, and they are named after the moons of Linūn, as well as other planets in the solar system.
Limnels themselves are named after one of Lingūn’s moons as they last for 1 lunar cycle of one of Lingūn’s moons.
Limnels can be further divided into halves and quarters of a Limnel for practical use, but that’s it for now.
